Sacred Heart University - January Mission

Last week we had the opportunity to work with 25 nurses from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.  We served a total of 450 patients in three different areas of Guatemala: Santa Maria de Jesus, San Antonio Aguas Calientes, and Jocotenango.  We gave out medicines such as antibiotics, pain relievers, and vitamins each day.

We had a total of 3 clinics for consult, 1 clinic specifically for children, an area for patients with diabetes, taking blood pressure and a station to teach children and parents how to avoid dental problems, giving each family toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Something that moved my heart was when we took the group to serve soup in the streets and treat the medical needs of those who live on the streets.  We sang Happy Birthday to a man and immediately the tears began to fall.  Of course, they too are people like us with feelings and birthdays.  They often forget the date of their birthday, it just another day like any other.  But Mark Annand (a member of our church) had taken the man to the hospital for a problem he had, and there they told him his birthday was January 24th.  This awakened in us happiness and sadness as there are many more like him in the world.

In each community we had the opportunity to get to know more deeply the people and places where there is still much need.  Many times we forget how important this work is, for the community, our country, and of course for our God.  We thank God that each community as well as the volunteers from the University were satisfied with the work done.  Praise God for a GREAT WEEK!!!
